Born in 1986, Swartz made significant impacts in the tech world through his work on the web feed format RSS and the technical architecture for Creative Commons, an organization aimed at creating flexible copyright licenses. His programming skills also extended to the development of the Python website framework web.py and the syntax of the lightweight markup language format Markdown.

Swartz's involvement in the digital world was further highlighted by his role as a co-owner of the social news aggregation website Reddit, to which he contributed until his departure in 2007.
