Raymond Martini
frère dominicain et écrivain catalan du 13e siècle
Raymond Martini was a 13th-century Catalonian Dominican friar and theologian who made significant contributions to the field of Judaism. As a member of the Dominican Order, he was appointed to study oriental languages in 1250, alongside seven other friars, with the goal of facilitating missionary work among Jewish and Moorish communities. This linguistic training would later inform his theological writings and missionary endeavors.
Martini's most notable work is the polemic text Pugio Fidei, which showcases his theological expertise and engagement with Jewish thought. His missionary activities took him to various locations, including Spain and Tunis, where he worked to spread his message. A document dated July 1284, bearing his signature, confirms that he was still active at that time. Through his writings and missionary work, Raymond Martini left a lasting impact on the theological discourse of his era, particularly in relation to Judaism.
