autorité rabbinique médiévale algérienne

Simeon ben Zemah Duran was a renowned Sephardic Jewish rabbi and scholar, born in 1361 in Medieval Spain. His family was forced to flee to Algeria following the devastating 1391 pogroms that targeted the Jewish community in Spain. Duran's intellectual pursuits were diverse, spanning multiple fields including philosophy, mathematics, natural sciences, astronomy, and medicine. This broad expertise would later contribute to his reputation as a leading authority in Jewish scholarship.

Duran's rise to prominence began in 1408, when he assumed the role of rabbinic leader of Algerian Jewry. His legal rulings garnered widespread recognition, not only in Algeria but also in Spain, North Africa, France, and Italy. As a respected rabbinic authority and polemicist, Duran earned the admiration of his peers and the Jewish community at large, with his opinions and writings carrying significant weight. He passed away in 1444, leaving behind a legacy as a prominent Jewish scholar of his time.
