Anatol Ugorski

pianiste allemand

Anatol Ugorski was a renowned classical pianist born in Russia in 1942. He pursued his musical education at the prestigious Leningrad Conservatory, where he developed a distinctive approach to his craft. Unlike many of his Russian counterparts, Ugorski focused on performing complex works by avant-garde composers such as Schoenberg, Alban Berg, Olivier Messiaen, and Pierre Boulez. This unconventional repertoire ultimately led to a significant turning point in his career, as an incident involving a Boulez concert in 1968 raised concerns about his political reliability among Soviet authorities.

The interruption to his career lasted over a decade, but Ugorski eventually resumed his academic and performance pursuits. He became a professor at the Leningrad Conservatory in 1982 and later fled to East Berlin with his family in 1990, seeking refuge from antisemitic harassment. A pivotal recording of Beethoven's Diabelli Variations for Deutsche Grammophon in 1991, facilitated by Irene Dische, marked the beginning of a successful performing and recording career. Ugorski went on to become a professor at the Hochschule für Musik Detmold, a position he held until 2007, leaving a lasting legacy in the world of classical music until his passing in 2023.
