Ursula Sternberg-Hertz

English-German painter

Ursula Sternberg-Hertz was a painter and textile artist of German origin, who later identified with English culture. Born in Germany, she was part of a Jewish family that faced increasing persecution by the Nazis, prompting their departure from the country in 1936. This marked the beginning of a period of displacement for Sternberg-Hertz, as she and her family sought refuge in other European countries.

During World War II, Sternberg-Hertz lived in hiding in the Netherlands and Belgium, a challenging period that likely influenced her development as an artist. Largely self-taught, she cultivated her skills in painting and textile art. Following the war, Sternberg-Hertz resettled in England and later moved to Canada and the United States, establishing herself as a talented English-German painter with a unique perspective shaped by her experiences.
