Sandra Lawson is a trailblazing American rabbi, born in 1970, who has made history with her multifaceted identity and career. In 2018, she became the world's first openly gay, female, and black rabbi, breaking down barriers and paving the way for greater diversity and inclusion in the Jewish community. Prior to her current role, Lawson served as Associate Chaplain for Jewish Life at Elon University, where she provided spiritual guidance and support to students.
In addition to her work as a rabbi, Lawson is a woman of many talents and passions. She is a musician, sociologist, author, and personal trainer, with a strong commitment to social justice and activism. As a veteran and vegan, Lawson brings a unique perspective to her work, and her interests in food activism and weightlifting reflect her dedication to holistic well-being. Currently, she serves as the first director of Racial Diversity, Equity and Inclusion at Reconstructing Judaism, where she continues to advocate for greater inclusivity and equity in the Jewish community.
