Although he briefly pursued higher education, his academic endeavors were interrupted when he was drafted into the United States Army.

Silverstein's career gained momentum in the 1950s, marked by the publication of his illustrations in various prominent newspapers and magazines, including Playboy. His work often explored adult themes, as evident in his satirical alphabet book, Uncle Shelby's ABZ Book.
