Wolfgang Leonhard

historien allemand

Wolfgang Leonhard was a prominent German political author and historian, specializing in the Soviet Union, the German Democratic Republic, and Communism. Born into a family that fled Hitler's Germany, Leonhard received his education in the Soviet Union, where he became immersed in communist ideology. He went on to become a key figure in the founding and leadership of the German Democratic Republic after World War II. However, his enthusiasm for the regime was short-lived, and he soon became disillusioned with its practices.

Leonhard's disillusionment led to his defection in 1949, first to Yugoslavia and then to West Germany in 1950. He later moved to the United Kingdom and eventually settled in the United States in 1956. There, he established himself as a respected professor at Yale University, teaching from 1966 to 1987 and authoring several books on communism and the Soviet Union. Following the end of the Cold War, Leonhard returned to Germany, bringing with him a wealth of knowledge and experience that continued to influence his work as a historian and author.
